Although there are a number of differences between China’s Spring Festival and Canada’s Christmas, there are several similarities as well. The first similarity is that the two festivals are both the most important national festival in their countries. In addition, either during the Spring Festival or Christmas, people will sit together, chat, and eat a delicious dinner. In China, the meaningful dinner is to maintain a good relationship between family members. Similarly, the Christmas dinner in Canada is also to strengthen the family members’ relationships. When family members eat together, they have chance to communicate with each other, thus narrows the distance between family members. Finally, as China values spirit culture, celebrate the Spring Festival together is very significant. Likewise, Canada attaches importance to the civilized culture. Both in China and Canada, the culture, especially the table culture is very important. If you wolf down the food in the Spring Festival dinner or the Christmas dinner, the wolf down manner will be regarded as a rude manner in both China and Canada.

Impressive Quotation

“An aim in life is the only fortune worth finding.” — Robert Louis Stevenson — The Amateur Emigrant

I like this quotation because it lets me know the importance of an aim in life. A person without an aim in life is like a boat sailing in ocean without direction. A person who wants to success must have an aim as a guiding light. people must have an aim, then they can make every effort to achieve the aim or they will easy to give up in doing every thing. In addition, the aim cannot be unreachable. For students, they can make a gradual goal in their study. Once they have their aim, they will focus on every aspects to make progress and achievement. Therefore, an aim in life is people’s wealth and is the most important thing  that people need to have.

Remembrance Day

November 11th is recognized as Remembrance Day which is a very significant day in Canada. It is a day to remember the soldiers and people who have died during World War I, World War II  and other wars. The day is a special day in many different countries as well. For instance, Australia, New Zealand and England all have a day to hold memorial activities.

Today is November 11th, 2013. People stopped doing everything for either one or two minutes of silence at eleven in the morning. I was definitely influenced by the scene. I thought of May 12th in China which is also a day to remember people for three minutes of silence. However, the day in China is different from the day in Canada in some aspects. For example, Chinese people commemorate the people who have died in the earthquake in May 12, 2008 while Canadian remember the soldiers. There is also a day called The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Day to lament the soldiers’ death in the war in China.

I saw a lot of people were wearing red remembrance poppies. I did not know why so many people were wearing this flower at first, but my teacher told me the reasons and I knew the red remembrance poppy is an important emblem of Remembrance Day. I read the poem “In Flanders Fields” to learn more about the flower and Remembrance Day. The poem described the writer’s sadness of losing his friends during the war. The poppies bloomed in the battlefields in World War I and later the red color became a symbol for the blood in the war. In addition, I listened some songs about Remembrance Day like Universal soldier, Christmas in the Trenches and Waltzing Matilda. Although all the songs are full of sadness, I can experience the soldiers’ indomitable spirit from the songs.

From my point of view, it is necessary for people to hold memorial activities at Remembrance Day. Keeping silent is a way to remember the heroes who died to protect their countries in the war. It is also a strategy to show our respect to the heroes. We are living in a harmonious society now, and we have to be grateful for those people who create the stable environment for us. We must cherish the peaceful social environment too.

The poem–In Flanders Fields

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep,

Though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.”

I have visited many places since I came to Vancouver. The place which I like best is Metropolis. I like it not only because it is the largest shopping mall in Vancouver, but it is also very convenient for me to go there. It is just located at the opposite side where I live and only three minutes’ walk from my home. I always pass through the shopping mall to go to school and I can buy things which I want from the shopping mall when I go home. Another reason of why I like the shopping mall is that it is a comprehensive shopping mall where you are able to do most of your shopping in one mall at the same time. With the combination of fashion, food and entertainment, I can buy quite a number of goods such as cosmetics, clothes, snacks, electronic products etc. In addition, there are several supermarkets in the mall which is enough to satisfy my demands. The last reason is about killing my spare time. When I am in that shopping mall time flies. For instance, when I feel boring I spend hours to hang around the shops in the mall or sit in a café to have some drinks. Furthermore, once there is a fantastic movie I will go to the cinema in that shopping mall to enjoy. Thus, as the above reasons illustrate, Metropolis which I like is a good shopping mall to go shopping.
